Science Week celebration at Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM), Kolkata has organized “Science Week Celebration 2014” on India’s prospects in space & astronomy. The celebration began with World Science Day on 10th November, 2014 and ended with the Children’s Day on the 14th November 2014. A number of educational programs including Popular talks, Painting Competition, Quiz, Design Competition, Film Show, Extempore, launching of a new science show on “Fire” etc. were conducted during this celebration. BITM has put up an exhibition on India’s Mars Mission to celebrate its success.


Prof. Somak Raychaudhury, Head of the Department of Physics, Presidency College, Kolkata inaugurated the exhibition on November 10. He also gave a popular talk on “India in Space”. Dr. Dibyendu Dutta, General Manager, RRSC (East), ISRO, Kolkata gave a popular talk on “ India’s Mars Orbiter Mission” on 11th November. L.M. Jyoti of Positional Astronomy Center, Kolkata gave another popular talk on “Development of Positional astronomy in India & its application” on 12th November.


A large number of students participated in the Sit & Draw competition on November 10. The theme was “Mars Colony/Man in Mars/Man in Space”. A design competition was held in Innovation Hub. The theme was “India’s Mars Lander”. Daytime astronomy workshops were conducted from 11th -13th Novemer. Open house Science Quiz was held in the auditorium on November 11. Sky Observation program was held every day in the evening. A space costume parade contest was organized on Nov 14 in the Innovation Hub for students of Class III-V. A group of underprivileged street children performed a street drama named “Abol Tabol” in front of packed audiences.


Approximately 3000 students took part in these events.
