National Science Day celebration at BITM, Kolkata

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata celebrated National Science Day on February 28, 2014 with a number of activities for school students. The activities included Science March from Park Circus Maidan to BITM, Painting Competition, Popular Lecture on ‘Developing a Spirit of Innovativeness : The Bosean way’ by Dr. Amit Ganguly, Advisor, Mukund Steels, a workshop on Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS) by INTEL, Open House Quiz and Science Film Show.


Smt. Mitali Banerjee, MMIC, Education, KMC and Shri Dhrubajyoti De, Deputy Commissioner, Eastern Suburban Division, Kolkata Police flagged off the Science March. 1739 students from 31 schools and colleges participated. Apart from 18 KMC primary schools, other schools who participated were Park Circus Girl’s High School, KV Ballygunge, Shiela Davan Memorial School, Mahadevi Birla Sishu Vihar, Alipore Multipurpose School, Modern High School for Girl’s, Shri Shikshayatan School. Also some colleges like Basanti Devi College, St Thomas College, Adamas Institute of Technology and Regional Institute of Printing Technology (Jadavpur) also observed National Science Day at BITM.


Sir C. V. Raman announced to the world his famous discovery “Raman Effect” on 28th February, 1928 and was subsequently awarded the Nobel Prize for it in 1930. To commemorate Prof. Raman’s achievement, Govt. of India declared 28th February as National Science Day and the nation is celebrating this auspicious day since 1987.
